Stan was born October 26, 1916, in Gooding, Idaho. He was a graduate of the University of Idaho, where he was a standout football player.
He played minor league football, then moved up to the National Football League, playing offensive guard for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1939. He also played for the franchise in 1940, which was the first year that they were called the Pittsburgh Steelers.
