Evan's first coaching position was at Lewiston high in 1950, guiding the Bengal football team to the Inland Empire League championship.
He eventually got the head basketball job at ISU in 1959, leading the Bengals to the NCAA Regionals in 1960. Later, Evans became a Big Sky and WAC football and basketball official, which he did for 20 years. He also worked a number of NCAA sectional playoffs and three times was selected to handle the Mid East Regional of the NCAA pllayoffs.
