Larry began his coaching career at Lapwai High School in 1958. He was also the school's Principal and later became the District Superintendent, but continued coaching football for 23 years until retiring in 1981.

His teams had a 160-45-8 (ties) won-loss record which included seven undefeated seasons. Twice his 3A teams finished number one in the state. When the state playoff system started Lapwai won the 1979 championship and Jeff was named North Idaho coach of the year. Throughout his career his teams used the single wing formation with the same dozen plays. His teams were known to be well grounded in the basics of blocking and tackling.and playing with great desire.
