Guy Wicks will be remembered as a founding figure of Idaho Athletics. A Moscow native, Wicks grew up watching the Vandals, then went on to become one himself. He was a three-year letter winner for the Idaho baseball team from 1921-24, a time during which he helped lead the team to a .500 win percentage.
After graduation, he stayed close to home. In 1941, he returned to Moscow as the head basketball coach. When World War II came around and forced many young men to put their coaching and playing days on hiatus, Wicks filled in anywhere and everywhere he could. He acted as head basketball coach twice in 1942 and 1947, coached Idaho baseball in 1943, 1947 and 1948 and also coached the freshman football team for a number of years. As a result of his leadership in Vandal athletics, U of I’s outdoor soccer field and intramural fields on the West end of campus bear his name. The University of Idaho’s "Guy and Grace Wicks Award" annually recognizes two outstanding seniors, based on academic success, campus activities and service to the university and the community.
